A Pharmacist Answers the 10 Most Common Questions About Vegan Vitamins

After 30 years as a pharmacist, I’ve been asked just about everything across the counter — usually some version of, “Which vitamin actually works, and do I even need it?” When I started Ethical Life, I wanted a vegan multivitamin that reflected what I believe in: real health, compassion for animals, and a lighter footprint on the planet. So here are the 10 questions I hear most — answered honestly, the way I’d tell a friend.

1. Do I really need a multivitamin if I eat a healthy diet?

Short answer: not always but most people, including people who are on plant-based nutrition, fall short on a few key nutrients. Even a colorful, whole-food diet can slip on a busy week. A daily multivitamin isn’t a replacement for good food; it’s a simple floor, so an off week doesn’t turn into a deficiency.

2. Are vegan vitamins as effective as regular ones?

Short answer: yes. Your body absorbs a nutrient the same way whether it started in a plant or an animal — what matters is the dose and the quality, not the label. “Vegan” simply means the source and the binders are plant-based, which often makes for a cleaner formula, not a weaker one.

3. What nutrients do plant-based eaters miss most?

Short answer: the ones to watch are vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, iodine, zinc, and omega-3s. B12 is the non-negotiable one. The rest are easy to fall short on when life gets busy which is exactly what a good vegan multivitamin is for.

4. Do gummy vitamins actually work?

Short answer: a well-made one absolutely works. The best vitamin is the one you’ll actually take, and for most people that’s a gummy. Just check the label for real nutrient amounts, no gelatin, and no vague “proprietary blend.”

5. Is it safe to take a multivitamin every day?

Short answer: yes — a properly dosed daily multivitamin is designed for exactly that. Stick to the serving on the label; with vitamins, more isn’t better. A balanced multi gives you steady, sensible support, not mega-doses.

6. What’s the difference between synthetic and plant-based vitamins?

Short answer: “synthetic” describes how a nutrient is made, not whether it’s vegan. What matters more is the whole formula — clean ingredients, no gelatin or unnecessary fillers, and honest dosing. That’s the standard I hold our gummies to.

7. Why is vitamin B12 so important on a vegan diet?

Short answer: B12 is made by certain bacteria and archaea not by plants or animals. Animals obtain Vitamin B12 either from bacteria in their digestive system or from B12 added to their food. Humans need to get B12 from food or supplement. Taking B12 as a source of supplement is the best and kindest way to avoid deficiencies. Low B12 creeps in slowly as fatigue, brain fog, and tingling. It’s the single most important nutrient to cover on a plant-based diet  and a daily multivitamin with B12 is the easiest way to stay ahead of it.

8. Are Ethical Life vitamins really cruelty-free and sustainable?

Short answer: yes — 100% vegan, gelatin-free, and made with compassion at the center. Every bottle gives back by helping feed the homeless and protect animals, and we keep our packaging as kind to the planet as we can. Health that also does a little good.

9. Who should take a vegan multivitamin?

Short answer: anyone could use a good multivitamin based on their age and the supplement formula including People on plant-based nutrition or mostly on plant-based nutrition, those with busy and active schedules, or the ones often running on empty could benefit from a great vegan supplement. If your diet is excellent and you already cover B12, you may not need one. If you’re not sure, a daily multi is easy insurance. When in doubt, always talk to your doctor.

10. What should I look for on a vitamin label?

Short answer: real amounts of the nutrients that matter (like B12, D, and iron), no gelatin, no vague “proprietary blend,” and a form you’ll actually take. If a brand hides its numbers and has tons of ingredients in small prints, that’s your cue to keep looking.
